Why Buying British Matters

The Bedmax Commitment to Quality and Sustainability

In an age where globalisation offers so many choices, buying genuinely British-made products can give you an assurance of quality and sustainability you can trust. Buying British supports your local and national economy, helps to secure jobs in the UK, and supports companies that are upholding higher standards of care and fair pay for the people they employ.

As a family-owned company headquartered in Northumberland, Bedmax is a home-grown British success story, making 100% British equine bedding to the highest possible standards of quality, value and integrity at three dedicated production plants across the UK, and selling all our products only through a nationwide network of local retailers.

We take great pride in our British heritage and the values it represents, and we benchmark our commitment to quality and sustainability against British standards that are among the highest in the world.

So when you buy our British-made products – Bedmax, Littlemax and Stockmax shavings, Hotmax heat logs, Strawmax straw pellet bedding and Catmax litter – you’re choosing products that are better for you and your animals, better for your local suppliers, better for the UK economy and better for the planet.

Supporting Your Local & National Economy

Buying British-made products helps create and sustain jobs, boost local businesses, and contributes to the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises. The more successful British businesses like Bedmax are, the more we contribute to the health of the economy.

Sourcing & Traceability

We source all our raw materials (fresh timber and high quality straw) only from renewable British suppliers. We keep our supply chains as short as possible, and we can trace everything we use to make our products back to its point of origin. We know where it comes from, and we have complete assurance in the British standards under which it is produced.

Environmental Sustainability

We have always been committed to reducing our carbon footprint year on year. We recycle all our waste, including all the dust we extract from our beddings, which we turn into 100% natural, low emission heat logs. We minimise transport and travel, we use 30% recycled plastic packaging, we only use recycled paper, and we are audited every year in the independent British Planet Mark scheme to monitor our progress.

Unbeatable British Quality Standards

Bedmax meets the British employment and production standards which among the highest ethical benchmarks for welfare, health & safety anywhere in the world. We have also helped create a new industry standard for equine bedding, and Bedmax is the first bedding manufacturer to achieve accreditation to the British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) NOPS Bedding standard.

This standard shows that every stage of our production has been independently audited to assure customers that all possible precaution is taken to avoid any contamination by Naturally Occurring Prohibited Substances that might cause a failed doping test.  It also means that every claim we make regarding the benefits and qualities of our products is accurate, honest and verifiable.

Supporting the British Tradition of Excellence

Britain leads the world in the improvement of our care for the health and welfare of horses and when we started making Bedmax 25 years ago our aim was to offer horse owners a new standard of horse bedding which would help safeguard the horses’ health and welfare in the stable.

Today, Bedmax shavings are the first choice bedding for owners, trainers and equine vets all over the world, and you’ll find Bedmax in the stables at almost every leading UK event from Badminton and Blenheim to Bramham and Burghley.

We are also proud to have been granted Royal Warrants by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, by the former Prince of Wales, and now by HM The King. These are uniquely British hallmarks of excellence, and when you buy Bedmax you are supporting a small family company playing a small part in continuing the tradition of British equestrian excellence not just here at home, but all over the world.
