Our 5th annual Planet Mark audit shows our carbon footprint has shrunk nearly 12%
We are delighted to be able to report that the results of our latest Planet Mark audit has measured a reduction of our carbon emissions by 11.9% over the previous year.
We signed up to the independent Planet Mark business certification scheme nearly six years ago, so the latest audit is our fifth, and the reduction demonstrates that we’re more than hitting the targets Planet Mark has set us in our continuing journey towards Net Zero.
The auditing process monitors our carbon emissions at our Head Office and at our five production facilities in Northumberland, Nottinghamshire and Hampshire, and measures our environmental performance in four key areas of the business:
- Purchased Goods & Services
- Fuel & energy related activities
- Waste
- Business travel
The reductions we have achieved are measured against the increase in our business activities as production and sales continue to grow. The previous year we achieved over 14% reduction but with lower turnover, so our progress has been consistent, and we’ll be aiming for a similar or better target in the current year’s carbon reductions.
Bedmax has always had an ambitious environmental policy at the heart of our business vision, but the Planet Mark certification scheme has given us a structured, target-driven process to measure our progress against.
For Bedmax MD and founder, Tim Smalley, demonstrating this commitment to the environment is essential for the business, its people and the thousands of customers who buy Bedmax products. “We have always been committed to reducing our carbon footprint year on year since we began making Bedmax shavings nearly 25 years ago, so it’s very encouraging to see these results vindicating our efforts to improve.
“Sustainability is becoming an ever more important factor to our own team and in our customers’ buying decisions, and the Planet Mark audit is the best possible assurance that we’re making a serious commitment to this incredibly important goal. We recycle all our waste, including all the dust we extract from our beddings, which we turn into 100% natural, low emission heat logs. We minimise transport and travel, we use 30% recycled plastic packaging, we only use recycled paper, and we’re investing increasingly in renewable energy.
“But we’re not done yet, and I hope very much we’re on course to deliver the same level of progress when Planet Mark audits us again next year.”
